The Controversy: Bromine is a halogen that can accumulate in the body's fat tissues and compete with iodine, potentially disrupting thyroid function. Long-term exposure has been linked to neurological issues and memory loss in animal studies. It has been banned in Europe, the UK, and Japan for decades.

The US Stance: After years of pressure, the FDA finally proposed a nationwide ban on BVO in late 2023, and by 2026, most major soda manufacturers have phased it out. However, it remains a cautionary tale of how slowly the US regulatory system moves compared to its international counterparts.

3. Red Dye No. 3 (Erythrosine)

What it is: A cherry-pink synthetic food coloring used in candies, popsicles, and even pistachios.

The Controversy: In 1990, the FDA actually banned Red Dye No. 3 from use in cosmetics and topical drugs after high doses were shown to cause thyroid cancer in rats.
